01 / YOUR STARTING POINT

Where are you starting from?

Choose the closest match. Use it to plan your next checks, not as an admission decision.

Make room for a different way of thinking.

Start with an English-taught bachelor’s that matches your school preparation. Read the subject requirements closely and compare the projects, assessment and freedom to choose courses.

University Admissions Sweden
  1. 01Check your school qualification and required subjects.
  2. 02Find the programme in the official admissions portal.
  3. 03Confirm English evidence and the application round.
  4. 04Read how to rank choices and complete the document requirements.
Keep in mind

For a move requiring a residence permit, check which application round gives you time to complete the process.

02 / THE REAL COST

Compare the degree and the full duration.

A clear Swedish budget starts with your fee status, programme length and housing arrangement.

01

Check whether you are fee-paying

Many applicants outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland pay application and tuition fees, with status-based exemptions. Use your assessed category and the university’s current invoice.

University Admissions · fees and scholarships
02

Give housing its own timeline

Ask about accommodation allocation, queues, contract dates and utilities. Compare the actual study location with your budget rather than assuming every Swedish city costs the same.

03

Keep living funds available

The maintenance requirement is financial evidence for residence. It is not an extra payment to the government and does not mean your actual monthly costs will match the threshold.

03 / MAKE THE NUMBERS YOURS

What would your first year look like?

Change the example figures to match your shortlist. See the expenses and the cash you may need to set aside.

UNIVERSITY STUDY / 12 MONTHS / SEK

Illustrative SEK first-year plan for a fee-paying taught degree, not a Lund University quote. Monthly living includes housing, food, local transport and routine costs. Arrival allows for travel, applications, residence charges, any required insurance and settling in. The fees field is a planning allowance, not a quoted national application fee. Count each item once, separate refundable deposits and budget each year of a longer programme.

04 / FUNDING THE MOVE

Find the right kind of support.

Start with an affordable study plan. Then explore funding that matches your background.

01

Find the award for your university

Check the scholarships for your fee category and programme. Confirm whether they cover tuition, part of tuition, or living expenses as well.

Explore official scholarship guidance
02

Check nationality and the current call

Different schemes have different eligible countries, courses and experience requirements. Being eligible for admission does not make you eligible for every Swedish scholarship.

Read the scheme’s own conditions
03

Keep research funding separate

If your goal is a PhD, inspect the advertised doctoral position and its funding terms. It is a different application from seeking a scholarship for a taught master’s.

STUDY. WORK. UPSKILL.

Work during and after your studies.

Understand the study-related options, then prepare for the next stage.

Check the permit decision date

For bachelor’s and master’s study permits granted on or after 11 June 2026, the general starting point is 15 hours of work per week during term. June, July and August are unrestricted. Specific exceptions exist; use the current official rules for your situation.

Plan the transition before expiry

Eligible bachelor’s and master’s graduates can apply for a job-search or business-starting permit of up to one year. Apply in time and meet its conditions. Doctoral graduates have a different duration; do not apply that figure to a taught degree.

Let your work show what you can do

Ask the programme how thesis projects and careers support operate. Build a portfolio, practise explaining your contribution in a team and make space to learn Swedish alongside your studies.
