Malaysian Qualifications RegisterSTUDY ABROAD / MY
Jom / Jom — everyday Malay for 'let's go'. The word Malaysians use to start something together.
English-medium teaching, British and Australian branch campuses, and fees that leave room to breathe. Malaysia's real question is not where you study but who awards your degree — and that answer is written down, in the Malaysian Qualifications Register and on the certificate itself.

Malaysia hosts branch campuses of foreign universities, local private universities, public universities and colleges running programmes awarded elsewhere. The teaching may look identical; the certificate does not.
MQA · entry qualifications for international studentsMQA evaluates the equivalency of school-level qualifications, not subject-by-subject grade equivalence. A twelve-year school qualification that admits you to a bachelor's at home is generally treated as the entry level here, but the university still sets its own requirements.
02 / THE REAL COST
The award, the tax and the compulsory pass costs.
A branch campus publishes its own annual figures — one lists roughly RM 51,840 a year for business, RM 54,720 for computer science and RM 64,800 for engineering in 2026, and RM 138,720 a year for medicine. Local private universities and public universities sit lower. Compare like with like by total programme cost.
Monash University Malaysia · undergraduate feesFrom 1 July 2025 a six per cent service tax applies to tuition and related fees for international students at private universities in Malaysia. On a RM 55,000 fee that is RM 3,300 a year. Ask explicitly whether a quoted figure is inclusive or exclusive.
Monash University Malaysia · undergraduate feesThe Student Pass process includes a personal bond, compulsory insurance for the whole study period and a post-arrival medical screening at an EMGS panel or in-house clinic, with a three-day window to appeal an unfavourable result. The pass is normally issued for up to one year at a time and renewed.

An illustrative first-year private/branch-campus plan in Malaysian ringgit. RM 55,000 tuition is a planning allowance. The RM 3,300 fees line is exactly 6% tax on that tuition; it contains no extra margin. RM 6,000 arrival costs provide an editable allowance for flights, pass processing, screening, initial insurance and settling in. Replace both with itemised quotes, including tax on other applicable fees. RM 3,500 is an illustrative combined rental-deposit and personal-bond allowance: enter the actual amounts for your housing and nationality. Refunds depend on the applicable conditions.

04 / FUNDING THE MOVE
Start with an affordable study plan. Then explore funding that matches your background.
Most usable funding comes from the institution, often as an entry scholarship tied to school results. Ask which body decides, whether it applies to every year, what grade you must keep, and whether it is calculated before or after the service tax.
Compare published feesResearch master's and doctoral places at Malaysian universities are sometimes attached to funded projects or graduate assistantships. Ask the department directly what is available, what it pays and what duties come with it, and get the terms in writing.
Check accreditation and programmesPart-time work is limited to twenty hours a week and only during semester breaks or holidays of more than seven days, in named sectors, with prior immigration approval. It cannot support a fee plan. Fund tuition and living costs from confirmed resources.

THE QUESTIONS THAT MATTER
Useful answers to bring into your next conversation.
It depends on the arrangement. A branch campus awards the parent university's degree; a 3+0 or franchised programme is taught in Malaysia under an agreement with an overseas university. Ask for the exact certificate wording and confirm it with the awarding institution.
